3. It’s going to allow you to introduce a few extra colors to your outfit. 4. It helps dress up an outfit that otherwise may not appear to be very dressy. 1. Standing out This requires a bit of courage. I think we live in a society and many of us feel that we like to blend in. It’s like one of those things, if you think back to your time in high school or your time in college, who wants to be the person that the spotlight is on and everyone is looking at and everyone is scrutinizing? For most of us, that is not the ideal place that we want to be. I mean, there are some people out there who just die and want that spotlight, but for most people, that’s not us. For various reasons, that’s just not us, but a pocket square is a small way, it is a small little detail which will draw attention. I challenge you to go to a large city and watch men walk by in suits and try to count how many pocket squares you see, very few, maybe 1 of out 100. I think the last time I did that was in London a few years back.

Yeah, in a city like London, I really thought I was going to see more, but it was I think maybe 1 of out of 50, 1 out of 100 men actually wore a pocket square. This is something that is very small, but it is something out of the ordinary and it is going to draw a bit of attention, but I think it is a good detail. Now, you need to keep it muted depending on what industry you are in. if you are working in an internet startup company in San Francisco, you can wear the puff. Wear that thing however you want. If you are working for a more conservative bank over in New York City, then you are going to want to go for the TV fold, just that straight one which Harry Truman used to wear all the time in the presidency. If you are down in Dallas and you are in a museum, depending on how the museum is, you have got a bit more leeway there. What I’m getting at is that you are bringing in something that’s going to help you stand out. People are going to notice it, maybe even ask you about it, and it is just something that helps you stand out from the crowd because at the end of the day, we all think of ourselves as unique human beings, but when it comes down to it, look at other people. Oftentimes, we do not think of other people as all unique. We think of them as, Okay, everyone else is all the same, but I’m the unique person. Well, by actually wearing a pocket square, you kind of help yourself to stand out a little bit different visually especially if you are constricted with everything else and you are having to wear a suit.

You might as well have fun with it. 2. Details It shows that you pay attention to the details and the people that notice it are going to be other sharp dressed people because they are always if somebody spends an extra five to ten minutes every morning making sure that they are well put together, making sure that they pay attention to their appearance, you are going to pay attention to others. It’s like if you go to the gym and you work out and you take care of your body. You notice when another guy I mean, that has nothing to do with your sexual preference. It has everything to do with the fact that you put in the time, you put in the effort to have a good physique, and when you notice a guy who is in good shape as well, it is kind of like you are part of a club because you know what it takes to look that way, to actually have a body that responds and has the muscle development that goes into that, the same way with dressing sharp. So you are going to start noticing women that go the extra mile and are very stylish. The great part here is that if you pay attention to these details, you can start complimenting other people on these details. You start noticing and you start seeing them. I do not know about you, but I want people on my team who pay attention to the details because it is in those details which make the difference between a company that does okay and a company that’s very successful. 3. Color As you can see here, I’m introducing a bit of red in my pocket square.

It’s something that I do not have it anywhere else in the outfit, but this color, red, is very closely related to brown and it works very well and it helps to bring out just colors in my skin. Now, that’s something that a lot of you all maybe you have got really piercing blue eyes, but you can’t wear blue shirts all the time because blue shirts, as you have probably noticed, if you have blue eyes, will bring out your eye color. But what you can do is bring that in the pocket square and allow to bring out the color there, or maybe you have got an eye color which you do not want to wear a green shirt or a grey shirt, but you can put that in your pocket square and all of a sudden, you are allowing yourself to bring out other colors and make them more noticeable. 4. It allows you to dress up a more casual-looking outfit Notice I do not have a necktie on and whenever I go to networking events, a lot of times when I’m out, I do not wear a tie. In a number of my posts, you will see me wearing a tie, but for most cases, I’m not wearing a necktie. Now, does that mean that I’m any less stylish or I’m any less dressed than a guy that’s just wearing a poorly fitted suit and has a tie, a red tie with a white shirt on? I do not think so. In fact, when I go to these networking events, people, they have to notice them wearing a pocket and that even though I’m not wearing a necktie, I’m wearing a very nice sports jacket, perhaps with a very nice pair of grey flannel trousers with well-polished shoes, so all those little details allow me to actually transcend and look more stylish and better dressed than perhaps somebody who’s in a higher technically, a suit is ranked higher when it comes to the level of formality than a sports jacket and a pair of odd trousers, but because my stuff fits and looks and the colors are so nice and it all works well, it actually brings me a bit higher. Now, if I were to wear a suit with a tie and have all the cuts and everything right, I would knock it out of the park. Okay, so those are my four reasons for wearing a pocket square. The big one is that you have got to get over the mindset that, I have never worn one in the past, and, Why would I start wearing one? Try it. Go with the very simple, conservative fold that’s just going to be a straight it is barely visible.

It looks like something that’s just barely peeking out of there. Watch Mad Men. They do it really well on that television show. See how many compliments you get. I think go with a simple white pocket square. That’s the easiest one to start with and it is going to match pretty much anything. All right. This has been Carl Centeno with this style blog. I will see you in the next post. Bye-bye.
