WITH ITS EXPERIMENTAL SPIRIT AND INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO DESIGN, ARFLEX CONTINUES TO BREAK NEW GROUND WITH ITS MODERN PIECES
Known for its inventive and technologically innovative designs, Arflex puts out designs that are not for seekers of the ordinary. Founded in 1947 by a group of engineers in Pirelli, the Italian furniture brand pairs research-driven innovation with creative collaborations with renowned designers and architects the likes of Franco Albini, Cini Boeri, Ettore Sottsass, and the Castiglioni brothers. Over the years, it has garnered a following among design aficionados and collectors. Many of its products have been conferred prestigious awards such as the Compasso d’Oro, and take pride of place at leading museums around the world. Here in Singapore, fans of Arflex head to Space Furniture for the brand’s unique designs.

An inventive and intuitive approach to design lies at the heart of every Arflex collection. Classic shapes are elevated with playfully unexpected yet functional details. The Strips collection of sofa and sofa beds, for instance, is among its most iconic pieces. Conceived in 1972 by leading female architect of the time Cini Boeri, it has a modular design that allows for countless permutations—the fully removable quilted cover can be unzipped as a quilt for the bed, or stay zipped on as part of the sofa covering.
The Botolo chair, also designed by Boeri, is another classic in the making. Standing on three tubular legs, the curvy chair provides a cosy seat while being a cheery addition to any room. Another stand-out piece is the Octopus by Carlo Colombo, a round Marquina marble table supported by lacquered metal “tentacles”—its design was inspired by the sinuous forms of sea creatures. Such imaginative details make each and every Arflex design a timeless piece to covet and collect, while being a joy to behold.
