Boity Thulo is strong, fit, with curves in all the right places. I have always been athletic and never really had body issues, she says. That’s why it came as a surprise when, a week before her 25th birthday dinner, she realised that the dress she’d bought was tight. It was actually the picture of me in the dress that made me aware that I wasn’t looking like myself anymore. The scale also played a role, but not as much as that picture.
More than anything, though, the unhealthy feeling was almost unbearable. I felt heavy, bloated, spiritually unbalanced and uncomfortable in my skin, she says. Boity went on a seven-day vegan diet. She also cut out salt, coffee, alcohol and sugar My weakness is sugar But the ultimate is any Haagen-Dazs and cinnabons. Still, she stayed on track.
Boity added boxing to her formerly haphazard routine. When I didn’t get time to work out at the gym, I’d go at it at home. Google was my friend. I searched for videos of specific workouts that I could do to target the areas I was trying to get into shape, she says. The moves that helped her shed six kilos in a month? Squats.
They work the abs and bum and shape my behind beautifully. And it is an all-in-one exercise. I also love calf raises because I’m obsessed with toned, defined calf muscles. Boity has dropped a dress size. I fit into clothes that I would usually steer away from. I’m much more confident too. Through this process, I have learnt that I need to stop abusing my body with bad food. In fact, my New Year’s resolution is moderation.
