Cindy Crawford

After growing up in a Midwestern farming town, Cindy Crawford arrived in New York in 1986, at the age of 20, as an aspiring model. Little did she know she’d become the first model to turn herself into a global brand, spawning insanely popular fitness videos, hugely successful beauty ranges and even a furniture and interiors line. Her marriage to Hollywood A-lister Richard Gere – 17 years her senior – garnered even more headlines, but would last just four years.

In 1998, she wed model-turned-entrepreneur Rande Gerber, and together the pair share son Presley, 16, and daughter Kaia, 14, and a very happy life together – which includes idyllic holidays away with their close friend George Clooney, who is Rande’s business partner, and his wife Amal.

Yet Cindy confesses she initially thought Rande, now 53, was too good to be true.In my younger years, I was attracted to the more intense kind of relationships that are very draining, she says, adding:When I was first with Rande I thought he was so solid, but then I wondered, wait, where’s all the drama? Maybe this is not good. Maybe this is not real! But a husband is the guy who’s solid, and you know you want to have children with him and you know he’s going to be there.

But her success hasn’t come without some tough lessons, and Cindy, who turns 50 in February, is sharing them in her new book Becoming, described as aspirited life manualthat’s part-autobiography, part coffee-table book. This book is my way of reflecting on the experiences that have informed my thinking and sharing some of the wisdom and life lessons I have learnt along the way, she explains, adding:It’s not a tell-all book – I wouldn’t have many dark secrets to reveal – it is really about my personal journey.

Here, Cindy chats about her meteoric rise to stardom, her concerns for her daughter, and why she still struggles with self-image…
