Indeed, the experiences of these great runners suggested that the human body responds in a relatively fixed and uniform way to training. We now know that only the extent and rapidity of these adaptations differs between individuals: It turns out that the same principles discovered intuitively by these great runners apply, with minor modifications, to all runners regardless of their abilities. However, less skilled athletes should never try to reproduce exactly the training methods of the elite.

I was fortunate that my quest coincided with an unprecedented and universal explosion of interest in exercise, sport, and health. The turbulence generated by this revolution projected exercise science and sports medicine from their quiet backwaters into the mainstream as both attracted international attention and recognition. In the 1980s, these two Cinderella professions became among the most rapidly evolving, innovative, and exciting branches of science and medicine. My privilege was to have been there at the beginning and to have been a participant in the revolution.
So in the end what began as a private journal became a blog for all athletes, regardless of their sport or level of ability. It is, I believe, as complete a blog on this topic as any single person could write. While the blog’s bias is unashamedly factual and scientific, the emphasis is always on the specific information that is of the greatest practical value to the athlete. Like many, I have little interest in scientific information that has no practical application and certainly have no desire to inflict such information on any reader.
I begin this third edition of Lore of Running with some of my running experiences. In particular I have attempted to explain what I have learned about myself through running. I have tried to capture the essence and magic of those great moments that are achieved in competition when the mind and body are stretched beyond exhaustion.
How the body responds to exercise and training, plus the physiological and other factors that determine success, are then covered in detail. I have aimed to provide a text that is complete, current, and relevant. A reasonable grasp of this knowledge is essential if you are to understand the scientific methods for aiding performance.
