So when I’m running hard, I like to remind myself that I’m exactly where Ithe real me, if not the coward in me who sometimes caves in to painreally want to be. You’ve been waiting all week for this workout, I will think, and tonight when you go to bed, you are going to remember it fondly. So let’s not wish it over with while we are actually here experiencing it. This is perhaps a bit metaphysical as performance self-talk goes, but it works very well for me, except on the days when I’m especially struggling.
Then I go to my old stand-by: Man up, Matt. MAKING IT MATTER The degree of suffering that a runner is willing to tolerate is largely dependent on the perceived importance of the effort. This is why runners are usually able to run faster in races than in workouts. Because performance in races generally matters more to us than performance in workouts, we are able to tolerate more suffering and run faster. If we set aside for the moment the phenomenon of choking (performing poorly because of the psychological pressure that attends efforts of extreme importance), as a general rule the more important we can make individual workouts, the training process as a whole, and our races, the harder we will try in them and the better our results will be.
Such meaningfulness can come from all kinds of sources. For some it comes primarily from innate competitiveness. Great runners often talk about hating to lose. It physically sickens them. So they would rather suffer all kinds of pain in the effort to win than lose and feel ill for days or weeks. The social environment can also give importance to running. Many observers believe that one reason Kenyans train so hard is that running is seen as one of the few viable paths to wealth and fame in that society. And closer to home, I believe one of the reasons I underachieved as a high school runner was that running well was not valued in my school or hometown. I never had any mentor who made me feel that my running mattered.Thigh Exercises While Sitting – Thigh Workout Ltf
