I Design Cutting-Edge Fashion
When Maddy gets inspired to make a piece of clothing, she does not use a needle and thread to bring it to lifeshe uses code. Her company, The Crated, creates wearable technology (picture a jacket that can heat up electronically), and this past September, she programmed the lights on an LED dress that was featured in the ZAC Zac Posen fashion show.
WHAT DOES CODE HAVE TO DO WITH FASHION?
Right now, technology is mostly limited to hard things, like fitness trackers, but imagine if you could have programmable circuits in your clotheslike a cooling shirt so you do not arrive to school all sweaty. My company focuses on wearable technology.
I’ve worked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to research possibilities for the next generation of space suits, and also with the School of Visual Arts, where I made remotecontrolled garments. What was it like to see one of your creations on the runway? Honestly, I felt really lucky. And it was such a relief that it worked! I spent between 150 to 200 hours of work on that project. Were you always interested in the tech world?
Actually, I always wanted to go into fashion. I didn’t take my first Webdevelopment course until I was 19. At the time, I just wanted to have a Web site built, but it was taking forever, so I decided to learn how to do it myself. That’s when I really fell in love with being able to create things and the freedom of not having to rely on anyone else. Was it scary to change up your career goals?
Growing up in my house, you didn’t have limitations on what you could be. My dad was an aerospace engineerand he also happened to be the person who taught me how to sew. So when I wanted to get into technology, I didn’t see it as Can I really do that? Instead it was, I’m going to sit down in front of this computer and figure it out just like my dad would sit in front of a pin cushion with me and figure it out.
A lot of people I know who are doing technical things are boys, but a big part of success is accepting oneself in entirety. When I walk into a room and I’m the only girland also the only minorityI’m like, I’m important, I belong here, and I’m going to be me.
