The breast fed babys stools. During the first three days all babies pass sticky black stools known as meconium. This consists of vernix, enzymes, bile and other substances the baby has ingested in the womb. Once these stools have been passed (about two or three a day), they gradually change to the normal breast fed babys stool which is soft and usually mustard yellow in colour, although they may occasionally be orangey or even be bright green in colour. THIS IS NOT ABNORMAL.
One of the joys of breast feeding is the fact that you have very little cause for concern regarding your babys stools. The consistency of a breast fed babys stools is not hard and it does not have an unpleasant odour.
Normal stools vary from a pasty consistency to a small watery blob in the nappy because all the solids have been digested and absorbed.
