J Something Turns Up The Heat on Top Billing

J’ Something

Mi Casa frontman J’ Something on singing at the top of his lungs, his favourite TV chef, and who does the cooking at home…

On growing up…

I’ve been singing for the longest time. As a child I would sing out loud at every opportunity and would always ask people to listen to me. At one point I was even charging my mother for private performances!

On meeting his Mi Casa band-mates…

We met randomly on a rooftop bar; we didn’t know each other from a bar of soap but started a jamming session there and then. I knew immediately it was meant to be, and now we’re like brothers.

On his love of food…

I grew up in a Portuguese home, which meant I was constantly surrounded by great food. My mom was a restaurant owner for over 15 years, which also has a lot to do with where my passion for food came from. On learning how to cook… It was a combination of my mom, my extensive collection of cookbooks, Google, and following other chefs on television.

On his favourite chef…

Jamie Oliver is at the top of my list – he runs a respected brand, has a great understanding of, and respect for, the consumer, and he does a lot of good, too. I also like that he creates simple meals that I feel I can conquer.

On who does the cooking at home…

Most of the time it’s a team effort, but Mondays are my nights for me to create something special. I’ll go to the shops in the morning to get everything that I need, then I’ll spend the rest of the day making my culinary magic.

On what’s next…

I’m working on a new cookbook. It’s a fun read that includes the story of my relationship with food. Some of the recipes I’ve created myself, and there are a few that have been passed down through the generations in my family. The cookbook is filled with easy, tasty meals that anyone can make.
