HOW TO KEEP YOUR FRIENDSHIPS ALIVE

Social media queen, style icon, radio host and TV presenter Bonang Matheba is one of South Africa’s favourite personalities. But with such a busy schedule, how does she nurture her friendships? Here she shares her sisterhood advice with us.

MAKE TIME I work long hours and my career is a very demanding one, but whenever I get a day off, I ensure I make time for my friends. A catch-up helps you stay connected with your friends.

LISTEN I regard the skill of listening as the secret to longlasting friendships. Sometimes all you need to do is listen, not to give a response, but just to hear your friend out.

CHOOSE WHO YOU SHARE YOUR TIME WITH Being in the entertainment industry has made me realise that we should avoid spreading ourselves thin I can’t stress this enough! Know who your real friends are; keep your circle small.

GET TOGETHER I love having my friends with me when I’m not working, and I do not always wait for them to make the arrangements, like initiating a gettogether. It can be anything, from lunch at Tashas, a day at the spa or an intimate dinner, sharing laughs.

RESPECT HER Generally, human beings should respect each other anyway, but a foundation of respect is the secret to sustaining friendships. Being considerate about your friend’s feelings, when you are giving advice or even arguing, will keep any friendship alive.

ENJOY HER SUCCESS Real friends support each other’s milestones and celebrate their successes. The last thing you need is a friend who is in competition with you. Run your own race and support your friend, because if you don’t, who will?APPRECIATE THE SMALL GESTURES Whether it is when she brings you a gift from her travels or you giving her a bunch of flowers to say thank you, the small things last forever’
