Wish I’d been there
Sadly, for me, The Rock Room is in Austin Texas, and I have never been to Austin Texas; however I do have this 14 song CD and, with a modicum of imagination, I can smell the spilt beer and sweaty armpits and that is a good evening by anyone’s standards.
Whilst I pack my imagination back into its box I should, for the sake of accuracy, say that this recording was made in January this year and all the songs were written by Mr Trooper. The accompanying musicians are Jack Saunders on upright bass and Chip Dolan on accordion and keyboards both of whom are exemplary and, along with Greg’s guitar and harmonica, form a tight top notch unit.
The songs themselves concern all the usual suspects – the unrequited, the requited, the carefree and the careworn, and are in the troubadour vein of people like Townes Van Zandt, Tom Russell etc. Of course it goes without saying that every song is highly literate and full of poetic poise, but, just possibly, less may be more on the lyric front.
That said if all the above tick all your boxes then you have probably got this on order already, but if your imagination has been fired you could do a whole lot worse than give this a listen. Ian Ambrose
