Trainwreck, the film you wrote and starred in, was huge. How are you handling being super-famous now?
It’s crazy. I’m feeling a major difference in the last couple of months. It’s a strange and awesome time right now.
You took on Kimye on the TIME 100 Gala red carpet. Have you always been so confident? Yes! I wish I could say, No, and this is where I found it, but although I have had moments where I have totally lost it, I get it back pretty quickly.
I was always an overly confident child and adult, to a delusional degree. I just never cared. I played volleyball in high school and the uniform was basically underwear with a T-shirt. My mum was like, You need to suck it in, hun. I was like, Nah.
Do you set out to shock people? When I started out, I wanted to shock. Open mic in America is just other comedians waiting to go onstage, no one is re ally listening. It’s a miserable group, so you have to shock and surprise people into laughing.
Who are your most famous fans? That’s the coolest thing, it is people I have idolised who are my fans. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Patricia Arquette and Tina Fey having them agree to be in a scene and say they think what I’m doing is awesome. Even Diddy has tweeted that he loves the show. And Madonna is into it. So weird.
Do you ever get nervous?
I still love it and I get excited when I have a newjoke, but I’m not nervous any more, like ever. I used to be really nervous on the toilet until the last minute. But now, performing to 10,000 people does not faze me at all.
