Warning: Do not take charcoal tablets or charcoal biscuits habitually for indigestion or flatulence because long-term use may be harmful – reserve them for emergencies.
Strictly speaking, this is not a herbal product, but charcoal does come from plants – it is burnt wood, afer all!

Charcoal tablets provide a very effective treatment for mild food poisoning and diarrhoea related to eating suspect food. Charcoal works by binding to the bacterial toxins which cause the symptoms of food poisoning. This inactivates the toxins and reduces the symptoms while giving your body a chance to mount an immune response, which will get rid of the troublesome bacteria. Charcoal is not absorbed by the body but goes through unchanged, which means that it will stain the contents of your stomach black – do not be alarmed if you happen to be sick. Your stools will also become very dark for a while.
Charcoal tablets can be combined with any other herbal treatment for food poisoning or diarrhoea.
How to take
You can either swallow whole tablets with water or herbal tea, or you can crush the tablets into powder, mix with some water and swallow the mixture. It is best to leave a short gap between taking the charcoal and herbs.
Adults: Take 2 tablets with some water up to 4 times a day.
Children (2-16years old): adjust the adult dose downwards, depending on the age of the child – see post 6.
