I took his advice, enrolled full time and in 1989, came out tops in a drawing and design competition hosted by South African Breweries, winning my very first prize. I couldn’t afford expensive paints and canvases, but got inspiration to paint with cheap material when I attended a workshop where a Swiss artist used plastic as canvas for his artworks. I started experimenting with a heat gun, applying the melted material onto a black plastic background, and got best marks for my plastic works that year.
