YOU SPLURGE ON THE WRONG SKINCARE

A sunscreen or cleanser does not have to be expensive to work. At the same time, serums, anti-ageing creams and chemical exfoliators are rich in active ingredients and ought to be considered an investment. Where to splurge and where to save when it comes to skincare can be confusing and you may be spending more than you need to.

BUY INTO INGREDIENTS, NOT BRAND NAMES

THE DERMATOLOGIST: We expect more expensive to be better than less expensive, but they are usually only expensive because they need to be marked up for things like packaging and advertising. Also, fragrance can be expensive, but you do not need fragrance for a product to work. Understand what you are buying. Look at the ingredient list on the back of products to make sure you know what you are getting. Some products are filled with talc and other fillers, which do absolutely nothing for your skin.

THE DERMAL NURSE: As long as the ingredients are suitable for your skin type and concerns, you can find very affordable cleansers and basic moisturisers with emollients like shea butter and olive seed oil. I would always invest in serums, as they work in the deeper layers of the skin and create change. And do not skimp on eye creams. The skin around our eyes is thinner than our facial skin and it has no oil production. It therefore needs different ingredients to do the job for hydration, brightening and circulation.

THE SKIN THERAPIST: The claims of stem cells, growth factors and other miracle ingredients are dubious at best. At present, there’s only plant stem cells from apples used in cosmetics – and they have no proven effect on the skin. The same applies to growth factors. Your own skin can produce growth factors – just stimulate those and you have your anti-ageing solution! A few proven ingredients with anti-ageing effects are vitamin A (it thickens the dermis and protects the DNA from damage) and palmitoyl oligopeptide (stimulates collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans).
