In retrospect, the essentials of the challenge Urry faced would appear rather simple to a modern student of chemistry familiar with the process of ionization. Ionization occurs when electrons contained in an atom (or a molecule composed of diverse atoms) absorb at the time of a chemical reaction a sufficient amount of energy (called the ionization potential) to break away from the normal electric potential system that binds them in atomic orbit.
