Petting may seem harmless enough, but if carried too far, it may lead to dangerous consequences. In the first place, it excites the entire nervous system, leaving it stimulated yet unsatisfied. All powerful emotions are enervating, and if continued for any length of time will exhaust the energy of the nerve-cells.
Then the sexual organs become stimulated, as blood flows to the parts; and this may lead to unfortunate consequences for the girl perhaps pregnancy, which she is certainly desirous of avoiding. One thing leads to another, and kissing and fondling may well carry young people out of control. The process may be pleasant, but the consequences are not! For your health’s sake, therefore, caution should be exercised in petting, especially girls whom you have just met and about whom you know nothing. A little self-restraint, in this connection, may avoid lasting regret.
Then, too, there is always the danger of contracting venereal disease, for syphilis may be contracted from kissing, if there is any cut or abrasion upon the lips, or if the germs reach any exposed mucous surface. Girls may well be infected even without knowing it.
