Winter 2016 collection

Nachiket’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection was titled Chiaroscuro. He explains, There are a lot of diverse references but essentially, it is about the play of dark and light, both metaphorically and literally.

A nature and photography buff he’s very active on Instagram his inspirations range from Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds to the medieval armour displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

CELEBS: Famous friends
A few months ago, Nachiket posted pictures from the BachchansDiwali bash. No surprise then that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has often been seen in his designs. Others who have worn his label include actors Lara Dutta,

Kalki Koechlin and Karisma Kapoor
I travel a lot whenever possible and I also travel vicariously through books.
I grew up reading National Geographic, Nachiket says.
In Chiaroscuro, the geometric shapes echoed pictures of the Notre Dame Cathedral taken on a trip to Paris. Fall 2014’s Maia transported you to New Zealand, while spring 2015’s Kalahari was a journey to the deserts of Africa.

Nachiket’s designs tread the boundary between couture and ready-to-wear. Innovations like a skirt made of tussar silk woven with lurex or embellishments like intricate aari work, beading and applique along with embroideries are the highlights. One ball gown skirt takes about 375 hours of embroidery. This craftsmanship is what separates designer wear from high street.

Straight cut
Over the last few seasons, the designer has favoured more structured, tailored shapes. So for Fall/Winter 2015, there were biker jackets, zip-front frocks, boxy blouses over circle skirts and curve-hugging evening wear. People want pieces that are wardrobe collectibles, he says, These can be worn equally well by someone who is 18 or 70.

The designer also has a parallel collection of Indianwear that riffs on his main collection themes The challenging thing about the Indian market is that we are so globalised, but at the same time so traditional. Here you can wear a sari and a blazer with equal aplomb.

Pristine white, silver and inky black are the main colours of the collection, with occasional detours into navy and maroon. I have explored every hue under the sun over the last few years, so now I want to focus a bit more on technique. This way, the colours do not take away from the detail.”
