These are often incorrectly referred to as food allergies: true food allergies result in much more severe symptoms, including anaphylactic shock. Food intolerance leads to digestive discomfort after eating a particular food type: sometimes headaches, sometimes skin rashes (eczema). Such food sensitivities seem to be very common nowadays.

Herbalists often recommend that you improve your digestive function and the condition of your intestines, rather than exclude half the foods from your diet.

Treatment options

• Supplement with probiotics for a month; take according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Improve your digestive function by combining a bitter herb with a restorative and a demulcent herb into a tea and drinking it on a daily basis until the symptoms improve. Two examples are given below and overleaf.

TEA FOR REDUCING FOOD INTOLERANCES (NO.1)

Ingredients

• 50g dry vervain

• 50g dry marshmallow leaf

• 50g dry calendula (for precautions see post 114).

To make

• Mix herbs thoroughly.

• Infuse 2 teaspoons of the mix in a cupful of freshly boiled water for 10 minutes. Strain and drink warm You can add honey to this tea.

Adult dose: 1-2 cups a day, separately from meals.

Children (2-16years old): adjust the adult dose downwards, depending on the age of the child – see post 6.

• 50g dry barberry (for precautions see post 51)

• 50g dry chamomile (for precautions see post 47)

• 50g dry marshmallow leaf To make

• Mix herbs thoroughly.

• Infuse 2 teaspoons of the mix in a cupful of freshly boiled water for 10 minutes. Strain and drink warm You can add honey to this tea.

Adult dose: 1-2 cups a day, separately from meals.
