From his earliest days as a performer, his song selection alone showed his musical education. As comfortable with Sarah McLachlan as Stevie Wonder, his interests ranged far and wide. You can hear it in his performances. He delivered his Stratford Star performance of Respect with a confidence worthy of the Queen of Soul herself. His rendition of Edwin McCain’s heartbreak anthem I will Be was imbued with a sadness the then-12-year-old couldn’t possibly have experienced personally. One thing is clear: Justin is no mimic. I have never tried to sound like anybody, he told McLean’s magazine. He’s said that the worst thing he could hear He’s everyone’s inspiration.
As the film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never quite accurately depicts, touring is a grueling business. In less than a year and a half, Justin will have traveled and performed in more than 100 cities in five continents. It’s a tour schedule that not only puts a strain on a person’s energy, but poses serious risks to damaging one’s voice through exertion. Justin found that out the hard way, when his tour hit the brakes in Syracuse in August 2010. Dog tired from performing in 37 cities in just over two months, and with a sore throat that seriously threatened laryngitis, the singer was forced to accept the inevitability of wear and tear on even the healthiest of bodies.
