Legendary rocker Ronnie Wood had a big surprise for his family, friends and fans last week: at the age of 68, the ever-youthful Rolling Stones guitarist announced he is to become a dad again, to twins.

Ronnie, who already has four grown-up children and ten grandchildren, and his third wife, 37-year-old theatre producer Sally Humphreys, told their exciting news through an official spokesperson for the band. Sally and Ronnie Wood are delighted to announce that they are expecting twins in June 2016, said their announcement. Needless to say, they are thrilled and overjoyed with the wonderful news.

Among the first to congratulate the proud pair was his best friend and ex-Faces bandmate Rod Stewart, 70 – himself a dad of eight, including sons Alastair and Aiden in later life with wife Penny Lancaster. The rocker told My blog!: Like myself Ronnie has a wonderfully large family, so it is time to put the cue back in the rack. Penny and I wish them all the luck in the world.

Ronnie’s 37-year-old daughter Leah told us she was thrilled, over the moon, while her mum, Ronnie’s ex-wife Jo, posted on twitter: Congratulations to my lovely X husband @ ronniewood and his wife Sally @SallyWood. I’m thrilled for you both on the news of the new babes. There were also celebratory pats on the back from another good friend, Sir Paul McCartney, who was 61 when he fathered his daughter Beatrice.

Now Ronnie, who has secretly been recording a new album with the Stones – their first in a decade might need to add a few lullabies to his song list for the two newcomers, who will be born around the time of his 69 th birthday on 1 June.

But it seems age and marriage to Sally have mellowed the former rock’n’roll hellraiser, who is also an accomplished painter.

I love being a granddad and being around the kids, he said in an interview with My blog!. I paint with them and sometimes I will frighten them by playing the guitar at them really loud.

The musician, who often invites his grandchildren backstage at his concerts, has also said: Life is all about family.

The London townhouse he shares with Sally will certainly be a vibrant home for the two new babies, as his daughter-in-law Fearne Cotton – who is the wife of Ronnie’s son Jessie, with whom she has two-year-old son Rex and three-month-old daughter Honey – has confirmed.

When we visit, all the kids make a horrendous amount of noise on his full-size drum kit, she told My blog!. There’s nothing quiet about that house. The calming influence for Ronnie is Sally, whom he had known for nine years before they started dating in 2012. After a whirlwind romance, the couple married in an intimate ceremony covered exclusively by My blog! in December that year.

The daughter of two classical musicians, Sally said she had never been a Stones fan, but fell for Ronnie after he invited her to be his plus one at Sir Paul’s wedding to Nancy Shevell.

She also hinted before they were married that she hoped to become a mum. I would like children, but not yet, she told My blog! shortly before the wedding.

There was encouragement from outside influences after the wedding, too. We’ve got all kinds of people trying to push us, said Ronnie. Rod [Stewart], for instance. He keeps telling me, Come on – if I can do it, you can do it.

With his party lifestyle behind him, Ronnie spends cosy evenings at home with Sally – who does not smoke or drink and likes to bake – playing backgammon, doing jigsaws and watching DVD box sets.

I wake up now and I think, Hang on a minute, everything feels so right,’ Ronnie told My blog!. Things are never heavy with Sally. She’s so easygoing and so much fun to be with. I have learnt so much from her and continue to learn from her. She’s wise.

I definitely think we were destined to be together, it was just a case of timing. Even my exwife Jo said to me, I do not know why you didn’t get with Sally a long time ago.

Sally is confident that her rocker husband will be perfect father material.

I think Ronnie will be a great dad, she commented. I have seen how good he is with his own children and grandchildren. He is the first one to pick up a baby.

Now, the happy couple and their families h eagerly await the patter of four tiny feet.
