The sick child

By the time your child has passed her first birthday you can expect that most congenital abnormalities will have been detected. Your problems are likely to be centred on the usual childhood infections and accidents and the less common diseases. How can you tell whether the problem will resolve itself without medical help and when you should call a doctor?

The same general rules as for the sick infant apply: if your child shows any of the symptoms listed in the previous section, call a doctor. Other situations will have to be judged on merit.

But if you, as a parent, feel there is something wrong with your child, even though her symptoms may not correspond to any of those mentioned, trust your instinct and call a doctor.
