This venereal disease is also contracted through sexual in-tercourse. Unlike gonorrhoea, it does not enter through the mucous membrane, but through the skin itself. For this reason, it may be contracted by kissing. It is primarily a skin disease. It starts as an ulcer at the point of infection, but the bacilli spread and infect the lymph glands. The latter then become tender and swollen. The chancre itself is soft, and appears a few days after infection, in contrast to the syphilitic ulcer, which only appears weeks afterwards. If untreated, these ulcers become larger and finally suppurate, forming an abscess.
The treatment consists in sprinkling the ulcer freely with iodoform powder. This has an intensely unpleasant smell, but is effective. Usually, the ulcer heals quickly after this, and the swelling in the lymph glands subsides. However, in certain cases, it may resist this treatment and other ulcers may spread over the thighs. In any case, you should consult your doctor at once, if a soft chancre is contracted, since it requires immediate and effective treatment. It usually leaves tell-tale scars, which may be recognized by the expert years afterwards.
